Manila, Philippines - The leader of the communist group, Benito and Wilma Tiamzon have filed a motion for bail at the Manila Regional Trial Court branch 32, so that they can attend the peace talks in Oslo, Norway.
According to the legal counsel of the couple, Atty. Edre Olalia, the motion for urgent bail filed at the court is not just seeking temporary freedom for the couple but also to their fellow detainee, Adelberto Silva.
The motion specified the importance of the Tiamzons and Silva in the peace talks between the government and the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front.
Silva and the Tiamzons, together with 13 other members of the communist group are facing multiple murder charges, in relation to the tens of people that were buried in the mass grave in Leyte, which was discovered in 2006.
According to the military, the remains found in the mass grave were believed to be the bodies of fellow rebels who betrayed their group in the 1980s.
The Tiamzons are also facing Kidnapping and Serious illegal Detention at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court; murder and frustrated murder in Laoang, Northern Samar; and illegal possession of explosives in Toledo City, Cebu.
Olalia said that they already filed a motion in the above mentioned courts and hearing for the said petitions may be held this week.
