Manila, Philippines - Former political detainees and other people’s organization trooped to the Supreme Court, asking the highest court to halt the government’s plan for a hero’s burial for the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The petition was filed by former BAYAN MUNA Partylist Rep. Neri Colmenares, Satur Ocampo, Dr. Carol Araullo of BAYAN, Dionito Cabilla of SELDA, among others.

The group of petitioners mentioned is seeking the Supreme Court to issue a Temporary Restraining Order, stopping the burial of the former dictator at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The group is also asking the Supreme Court to nullify the memorandum of Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and the directive of Rear Admiral Ernesto Enriquez to give Marcos a hero’s burial.

The petitioners insisted that this is against the law, particularly in the regulation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, insisting that members of their institution who were removed from their posts or have been charged in connection with moral turpitude are not qualified to be given a hero’s burial.
The petitioners were referring to the alleged multiple incidents of torture and illegal detention during Martial Law.
