Manila, Philippines - The Abu Sayyaf Group was scheduled to behead the Indonesian crew member who was able to escape in early morning of Wednesday in an isolated barangay in Sulu.

Based on the report of Western Mindanao Command Spokesman Major Felimon Tan, Mohammad Safyan was brought by members of the ASG in mangrove areas in barangays Bual and Bato-Itum in Luuk, Sulu to be beheaded after his family failed to pay the ransom money.

However, Mohammad was able to escape his captors and swam away.  He was found by residents hanging in the fishing nets near the ocean and was immediately brought to the municipal police station in Luuk, Sulu.

“The Indonesian will be brought to the Sulu Provincial Police Office for processing and other documentation prior to eventual turnover to his family.”

Safyan, together with six other Indonesian crew of tugboat Charles, were abducted by the ASG in the waters near the border of the Philippines and Malaysi last June 23.

In line with this, Major Tan said that the joint task force Sulu will continue with its offensive operations against the ASG and rescue its remaining kidnap victims.

The Abu Sayyaf Group still holds nine Indonesians, five Malaysians, a Dutch national, a Norwegian national and five Filipinos.

Ewold Horn and Swiss national Lorenzo Vinciguerra, are both European birdwatchers who were abducted by the ASG last February 1, 2012 in Tawi-Tawi.

Vinciguerra was able to escape the ASG camp last December 2014.
