MANILA -- The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reduced by P10 the flag-down rate for taxis in the country, an agency official said Friday.
Ariel Inton, a member of the LTFRB Board, said starting March 9, the flag-down rate for taxis will be down to P30 from P40, which has been in place since January 2011.
Taxi drivers do not have calibrate the meters again to reflect the new rate, he said, as they just have to automatically deduct P10 from the actual fare.
"P40 pa rin makikita roon (sa meter). 'Pag ang pamasahe P100, P90 lang ang babayaran," Inton said in a radio interview.
He said the rollback is temporary.
The official urged the taxi-riding public to report the drivers who would not implement the fare reduction, which came due to falling oil prices in the world market.
Quezon City Councilor Jesus Manuel "Bong" Suntay, president of Philippine National Taxi Operators Association Inc., was unhappy with the fare decrease, saying this would lead to smaller take-home pay for drivers.
"Malaking kawalan sa mga taxi driver itong pinalabas ng LTFRB nasa P350 kada araw ang mawawala sa kanila," he said.
He said the rate reduction is "unjustified," citing lack of public clamor for it.
The councilor said they are yet to identify what steps to take against the new flag-down rate. (Sunnex)
