HOLLYWOOD - A short film about an illegal boxing ring starring a new Fil-Am Hollywood actor will premiere at film festivals this year.
The upcoming short film "Cross" tells the story of a Filipino-American fighter in the dangerous world of underground boxing in southern California.
It stars Jason Mordeno who says he enjoyed getting into the mindset of a fighter because of his admiration for Manny Pacquiao.
"It really plays a part in me doing what I wanna do. Growing up, this is my dream, for Pacquiao to open the door for people like me to really go for it, it's a real honor," Mordeno said.
Pacquiao, himself a part-time actor, said he's honored that many young people look up to him.
"Salamat sa suporta ng mga fans, lalo na sa mga Pilipinong kababayan natin dito," he said.
Apart from "Cross," Mordeno was also one of the lead stars of "Boys Before Friends," an adaptation of a Korean television series.
Cross is written and directed by filmmaker Gerry Maravilla.
He said casting Mordeno and other actors of color in the movie is important to him because their stories are rarely fully represented in mainstream media and films.
The short film will be entered in various film festivals this year.
