MANILA -- Malacañang appealed on Saturday to Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin "Junjun" Binay to follow calmly the six-month preventive suspension order by the Office of the Ombudsman so that the services in the city would not be hampered.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte cited that on Friday some of the judges in the Makati courts had to cancel the hearings because of the situation in the city hall and surrounding area where Binay's supporters were staying.
"Huwag na lang po nating palalain pa ang sitwasyon...I don't think anybody wants an untoward incident to happen," she said in an interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan.
She also defended the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), which will serve the suspension order issued by the Ombudsman against Binay due to alleged overpriced Makati City Hall Building 2.
The DILG is headed by Secretary Manuel Roxas II, an known political rival of Vice President Jejomar Binay, the mayor's father.
"We're hoping that calmer minds and cooler hearts will prevail because in this particular case, ang DILG lang naman po ay nautusan ng Office of the Ombudsman na i-carry out 'yung kanilang suspension order," Valte said.
The DILG, through the Philippine National Police, is set to serve the suspension order against Binay on Monday.
But Binay's camp said that what has been happening to him was all politically motivated.
Valte also said that irrespective of the political party affiliation, Vice Mayor Romulo Peña would be the one to take over after the suspension order against Binay is served.
She was reacting on the alleged statement of the camp of Binay, expressing that Peña could not be capable of running the city because he is from the Liberal Party, an administration party.
"Hindi po natin maiiwasan, kahit ano hong partido 'nung vice mayor, sa ilalim po ng batas, siya po talaga ang aakyat kapag nasuspinde po ang mayor," she said.
Binay's camp reportedly cited that some members of the Cabinet who came from LP failed in their job, such as Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, who is currently being hounded by the maintenance issue of the mass rail transport system, and Budget Secretary Florencio Abaya, architect of the disbursement acceleration program, which was partly declared as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
