Newly-crowned Mister International, Police Officer 2 Mariano Flormata Jr., said yesterday that he will continue to be a bomb technician of the Philippine National Police (PNP) despite winning the international pageant in South Korea last Saturday night.

“Mag-pupulis pa rin po ako. Ito talaga ang profession ko (I will remain a police officer. This is my real professtion)” said Flormata, whose screen name is “Neil Perez,” in an exclusive interview, after winning the 2014 Mister International, the first for the Philippines.

But Flormata said there is a possibility that he might go on leave from the PNP to fulfill his duties and responsibilities as Mister International.

After winning the pageant, Flormata prayed for his seven batch mates and the rest of the fallen 44 victims in the gruesome battle in Maguindanao last January 25.

“Dine-dedicate ko itong laban ko sa Korea sa mga ka batch ko po na nag-buwis sa SAF at para sa mga SAF. Papasalamat din ako sa Philippine National Police,” said Flormata.

Seven of those who were slain in battle were his batchmates in Mabalasig Class.
Flormata is a member of the PNP Aviation Security Group assigned at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport for seven years now.

He is expected to return to the country on Thursday, February 19.

Beating the Odds
Flormata, 29, was not among the popular candidates to win the title.

Representatives from Lebanon, Indonesia, Slovenia or Poland werefavored to take home the title.
Aside from that, critics said that the Filipino policeman is short in height, does not possess good communication skills, not a fashionista, and the eldest among the candidates.

Despite the odds, Flormata took the title.

“I think his being humble and simple made him a winner. He’s got the universal appeal. Beyond that, it’s his background that counts a lot.

It’s not easy being a policeman in the Philippines. Dadaan ka sa butas ng karayom,” said NUP Loreto B. Concepcion, of the PNP Police Community Relations Group. - by Robert R. Requintina | Manila Bulletin
