Five soldiers were killed and five others were wounded following a clash with communist New People’s Army (NPA) insurgents in Ilocos Sur, night of February 26.
Information reaching Camp Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo showed that a platoon of soldiers belonging to the 81st Infantry Battalion (81IB) were conducting joint law enforcement operations together with the Philippine National Police Regional Public Safety Battalion when they were waylaid by at least 15 NPA rebels around 8:00 p.m. in Barangay Namitpit.
“The NPA bandits used the civilians as human shields in that particular encounter. My troops tried their best to avoid civilian casualties by controlling their fires,” said Lt. Col. Jason Bajet, Commander of the 81IB.
The troops were able to call for reinforcement and civilian ambulances which arrived around 10:00 p.m.
However, the ambulances were also fired upon by the bandits, forcing the drivers to turn back towards a safer location.
