MANILA, Philippines - A 35-year-old activist who traveled from Masbate to Quezon City ahead of the first State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Duterte died a day before the SONA.
University of the Philippines Chancellor Michael Tan identified the activist as Roberto Mapa, a member of Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP).

Mapa was one of over 1,000 farmers and peasants who joined the caravan from Masbate to ask for land reform due to the poor living conditions in the province. They left the province last July 20 and arrived in Quezon City last July 23.

KMP Masbate coordinator Toto Ramos said Mapa complained of shortness of breath after coming from their program at the Quezon Memorial Circle on Sunday.

"Nagkaroon kami ng mahabang paglalakad kahapon...Masaya naman siya. Pero nang matapos ang mahabang paglalakad ay...inatake siya ang puso, nahirapan huminga. Excited nga siyang makasama," Ramos said.

UP has welcome over 3,000 activists from Bicol ahead of the SONA. The activists spent the past two nights in the open courts inside the university.

Tan said more activists from the provinces joined the march this year, compared to previous years.
He said he hopes the Duterte administration will live up to its promise of change to the people.
"They really expect change. I hope the administration realizes the full (extent of these) hopes," Tan said. CT: Carolyn Bonquin of ABSCBN News
