It is in the hands of President Rodrigo Duterte on how he will implement the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration regarding the case filed by the Philippines against China.

Now that the ruling of the UN Arbitral Tribunal has been released, Associate Justice Francis Jardeleza said that President Duterte can start with the necessary process on how he will implement the Tribunal’s ruling.

Jardeleza added that resolving the territorial dispute over at the West Philippine Sea should be resolved in a diplomatic way.  The two parties involved should end up with an agreement regarding the contested islands.

Jardeleza admits though that the country’s wish for maritime entitlement and territorial integrity will have to go through a long process.

Jardeleza is one of the representatives of the Philippines in its case against China while he was still then the country’s Solicitor General.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. welcomes the decision of the International Arbitration Court.
During a press briefing at the Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, Yasay said that the said ruling of the UN Arbitral Tribunal regarding the said case can be considered a milestone decision.

In line with this, Secretary Yasay said that the government should push for a peaceful resolution in the on-going tension with China.

The DFA secretary added that China should respect the decision of the Tribunal court.
