Roach: 'Floyd Sr. is a terrible cornerman, Floyd Jr. needs to be humbled'

MANILA - If Manny Pacquiao isn't willing to do the trash-talking, his trainer Freddie Roach certainly is.

As both training camps commenced, so did the verbal gamesmanship as initiated by the six-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year, when he began his tirades against both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his father Floyd Sr.

Roach, who turned turned 55 years old on Thursday, first blasted Floyd Jr. for his trademark flamboyance, adding that the reigning pound-for-pound king needs to be brought back down to Earth.

"He's not the best guy in the world," Roach said in an interview with The Sweet Science. "He's a great fighter, but I don't think he's a good person. He throws money around, and there's so many poor people out there. He's not a good role model. Manny Pacquiao is the best role model."

"Losing would not be the worst thing for Floyd. I think he needs to be humbled, and I think Manny Pacquiao is the one to do it."

Roach then took shots at Floyd Sr., whom he criticized for being in his son's corner instead of his brother Roger. Roger has been handling the training duties for the younger Floyd since 1996, and the two seemingly had a more smooth-sailing working relationship.

"My whole thing is, Floyd's not going to have his best cornerman in his corner because there's no question in my mind that Roger is the better trainer," Roach said in another interview with Yahoo! Sports. "Floyd got 90 percent of his wins with Roger working with him. Roger is way better."

"I think Floyd Sr. is a terrible cornerman, I really do. That's going to work to our advantage on fight night because in the corner, I'm not going to be nervous and I'll be able to calmly talk to Manny and make whatever adjustments we have to make."
