Last stand: UST, NU in do-or-die match for finals seat

National University and University of Sto. Tomas square off for the last bus trip to the finals.
By Mark Escarlote| ABSCBN Sports
No room for mistake.
No tomorrow.
Now or never.

The two-time defending champion National University Bulldogs and University of Sto. Tomas Tigers battle in a winner-take-all match for the last championship round seat Saturday in the 77th UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.

The Bulldogs and Tigers face off for the last time this season at 2:00 p.m. for the right to face the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles in the best-of-three Finals set to start on Wednesday at the same venue.

NU took away the twice-to-beat advantage of UST last Wednesday, 26-24, 28-26, 23-25, 25-21, using their championship experience to survive and force a decider against a team who returned in the Final Four for the first time in three years.

“’Yung UST matagal sila bago nakapunta sa Final Four kaya sobrang advantage kami (sa experience),” Bulldogs coach Dante Alinsunurin said.

Alinsunurin added that there are some chinks in their game that they need to iron out in order to finish off the Tigers and forge a rematch against the team they swept last year.

“Siguro dodoblehin pa rin namin ang ginagawa namin. Mas dadagdagan namin kung saan kami nagkulang,” he said. “Actually yung transition offense namin nagkakaproblema kami. Alam na namin ang gagawin kaya lang di pa rin namin ma-establish yung sarili naming kung paano siya ayusin.”
This season, NU leads their match head-to-head against UST after splitting the two round eliminations.

Four Bulldogs scored in double figures the last time out in a clinical display of team play that spoiled UST hitter Mark Alfafara’s league-best 37-point performance. Peter Torres, Rueben Inaudito, Ruben Baysac and Jan Paglinawan shared the scoring load making life difficult for UST’s defenders.
“Yun ang sinasabi ko sa kanila. Sabi ko hindi tayo pwedeng may superstar tayo kasi kung maglaro tayo dapat team,” Alinsunurin said. “Yung setter (Vince Mangulabnan) kasi namin ginagawa niya na ang lahat ma-involve sa opensa.”

And this is what UST coach Odjie Mamon wanted his team to address.

“Hindi namin na-execute yung defensive stop for NU,” he said. “Isa lang ang obvious na factor: walang katulong si Alfafara.”

After Alfafara, Arnold Bautista is the only Tiger with double-digit score of 14.

“’Yun ang gusto kong i-stress sa kanila na magtiwala sa players pero huwag umasa,” Mamon said. “Magkaiba kasi ang nagtitiwala ka sa ka-teammate mo sa umaasa ka sa teammate mo.”
UST also committed 26 errors that Mamon attributed to their lack of experience compared to their seasoned adversary.

“Totoo yun kasi yung sa kanya, nauna kami sa 24 tapos sila tuloy lang,” Mamon admitted, who reportedly stepped down from his post as Tgresses coach after failing to bring UST back in the women’s semifinals for three years in a row.

“Kami kahit lumamang kami, pagdating sa dulo nara-rattle pa, factor din yun,” he added. “I thought (nasolusyunan) ko na yun. Nagtiwala ako sa maturity nila, pero it’s something to work on.”
For the Tigers to return to the finals for the first time since their runnerup finish last Season 74 and take home their first title since winning it all five years ago, Mamon will have to dig deeper in his bag of tricks.

And this is what he has in mind.

“May mga huhukayin ako sa baul na preparasyon,” he said.

The game will air live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action channel 23, BALLS SkyCable HD 167, tfc.tv. TFC Bro, sports.abs-cbn.com/livestream and uaaplivestream.uaapsports.tv with a same day replay on BALLS SkyCable channel 34/ Destiny Cable channel 36.

Enrile getting better, says son Jack

MANILA - Senator Juan Ponce Enrile is feeling better now, according to his son, former Congressman Jack Enrile.

The 91-year-old senator, who has been detained at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital for plunder and graft charges over the pork barrel scam, was rushed to the Makati Medical Center early Thursday because of pneumonia.

He had been suffering high fever for the past two days and had even coughed blood.
Speaking to "Mornings @ ANC" on Friday, the younger Enrile said his father no longer has fever and has not coughed blood in the last 24 hours.

"He's fine, he's getting better. His fever is gone for today... He's under massive intravenous antibiotics, but that's to be expected given the level of infection of his pneumonia. He's being monitored and right now wala siyang fever, medyo mataas ang kanyang appetite. That's a good indication that he's getting better," he said.

"He has not spat any blood in the last 24 hours, I believe. But given his advanced age and his frail condition at this point, he is under constant medical supervision and observation," he added.
He said right now, only immediate family members are allowed to visit the senator.

He said his father is expected to stay in Makati Medical Center "for as long as the pneumonia is there."

"Once the pneumonia is gone and everything is under control, I'm sure the Philippine National Police will bring him back to his former place of detention," he said.

Jack, meanwhile, thanked the PNP and the Sandiganbayan for being cooperative in making sure that his father is in good health.

The anti-graft court has a standing resolution that allows Enrile to be brought to another hospital with better facilities in case of emergency.

"Fortunately, the Sandiganbayan and the Philippine National Police have been very, very cooperative and they promised to give him the utmost care," the younger Enrile said.

Pag-IBIG Fund income hits record in 2014

MANILA – State-run Pag-IBIG Fund’s income hit a record last year.
In a statement, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay, who chairs the Home Development Mutual Fund said the agency earned P16.22 billion in 2014, its biggest in its 34-year history.
Pag-IBIG’s assets rose 9.12 percent year-on-year to P376.09 billion.

“Pag-IBIG Fund continues to be bigger, offers better services and more benefits to its members through faster and more efficient operations, all without increasing its monthly contribution which remains at P100 since the 1980s,” Binay said.

“The record-breaking achievements in 2014 reinforce Pag-IBIG’s solid and robust financial standing that resulted from the reforms and innovations that Pag-IBIG put into action in the past four years,” he said.

Housing loan takeout also hit a record at P40.6 billion for 54,026 units, up 19 percent and 14 percent from the previous year’s P33.96 billion for 47,562, respectively.

Despite the increase in loan take-up, loan quality improved, with the agency’s non-performing loan ratio easing to 13 percent last year from 17 percent in 2013, making the 2014 figure the lowest since 2008.

Pag-IBIG attributed the improvement partly to the outsourcing of collections for housing loans in arrears, resulting in the conversion of 47 percent of the agency’s non-performing loans, or 189,498 accounts, into active accounts. Pag-IBIG-accredited collection agencies raised P2.7 billion.
“In 2014, Pag-IBIG recorded an impressive housing loan portfolio, a feat propelled by the reforms implemented by the Fund such as the creation of a department focused on marketing the housing business, the execution of strengthened underwriting guidelines, and an efficient collection mechanism, which resulted to high loan takeouts and the best performing loans ratio Pag-IBIG has ever attained in its 34-year history,” Binay said.

The agency last year also increased its membership, which in turn lifted savings. Pag-IBIG members increased 9 percent to 14.76 million last year from 13.49 million in 2013. This in turn was due to a 27 percent increase in voluntary members and a 20 percent uptick in overseas Filipino worker members.
As a result, members’ savings reached P28.07 billion last year, including P3.8 billion in voluntary upgraded savings, or amounts beyond that mandated by law.

“Hindi po matatawaran ang P4.66 bilyon na boluntaryong inimpok sa Pag-IBIG ng 121,979 Pag-IBIG members. Wala pong duda, ito ay isang patunay ng tiwala at kumpiyansa sa Pag-IBIG Fund ng mga Pag-IBIG members,” Binay said.

The Pag-IBIG board has declared P11.34 billion in dividends last year, equivalent to a dividend rate of 4.18 percent, which is higher than the 0.5-1 percent offered by banks.

Savers under the Modified Pag-IBIG 2 (MP2) Program earned dividends at a higher dividend rate of 4.68%.  Pag-IBIG has credited a total of P80.73 billion to members’ accounts in the past decade, 58 percent of which was declared from 2010 to 2014.
“Dahil sa mas lumalaki at mas matatag na pondo, ang mga Pag-IBIG members ngayon ay may mas marami nang benepisyo,” he added.

To boost service, Pag-IBIG strengthened partnerships with other government agencies such as the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Land Registration Authority and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.

CLEVELAND — LeBron James scored a season-high 42 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors 110-99 on Thursday night for their 18th victory in 20 games.
James added 11 rebounds, outplaying fellow MVP candidate Stephen Curry and leading Cleveland past the team with the NBA’s best record for its 11th straight home victory.

Curry scored 18 points, but had only six after the first quarter and was 5 of 17 from the field. David Lee led Golden State (44-11) with 19 points.

James was out with knee and back injuries when the teams met Jan. 9, a 112-94 win for Golden State. Although the four-time MVP hit 15 of 25 from the field Thursday, the back apparently is still an issue. James stretched out on the floor instead of sitting on the bench when he had a rest in the fourth quarter.

Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, who scored 24 points, left the game in the third quarter with an injury to his left shoulder, but returned early in the fourth.

SUNS 117, THUNDER 113, OT
PHOENIX — Russell Westbrook scored 39 points in his 12th career triple-double but missed what would have been the game-tying layup with 5.7 seconds left in overtime, and Phoenix snapped Oklahoma City’s seven-game winning streak.

In an intense matchup of point guards, Phoenix’s Eric Bledsoe just missed a triple-double with 28 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.

Westbrook missed his first eight shots and finished 12 of 38, 1 of 10 from 3-point range, but scored 31 in the second half and overtime of his fourth triple-double this season.
Markieff Morris scored 29 for the Suns, who pulled within 1½ games of the Thunder for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Clash in Ilocos Sur kills 5 soldiers, 5 NPA

Five soldiers were killed and five others were wounded following a clash with communist New People’s Army (NPA) insurgents in Ilocos Sur, night of February 26.

Information reaching Camp Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo showed that a platoon of soldiers belonging to the 81st Infantry Battalion (81IB) were conducting joint law enforcement operations together with the Philippine National Police Regional Public Safety Battalion when they were waylaid by at least 15 NPA rebels around 8:00 p.m. in Barangay Namitpit.

“The NPA bandits used the civilians as human shields in that particular encounter. My troops tried their best to avoid civilian casualties by controlling their fires,” said Lt. Col. Jason Bajet, Commander of the 81IB.

The troops were able to call for reinforcement and civilian ambulances which arrived around 10:00 p.m.

However, the ambulances were also fired upon by the bandits, forcing the drivers to turn back towards a safer location.

MRT-3 operations suffer another glitch

The operations of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3 suffered another glitch when the brake system of one of its light rail vehicles (LRVs) malfunctioned shortly after leaving a Makati City station Friday morning.

Reports said an MRT-3 coach made a sudden stop at around 8:20 a.m. after it left the Buendia station, causing its driver to ask the passengers to alight in the next station.

It was not immediately clear if there were passengers hurt but the reports said the abrupt stop caused them "to fall like dominoes."

MRT-3 general manager Roman Buenafe said the passengers were picked up by another coach at the Ayala station.

He noted that it was best that the passengers were dropped off at the nearest station as a precaution.
This weekend, the management will close MRT-3 operations starting at 9 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 28) and reopen at 12 noon Sunday (March 1) to give way to rail replacement works.

Buenafe earlier said that 150 meters' worth of stabling rails from the MRT depot will be used to replace the more critical portions of the mainline between Taft Ave., Pasay City and Magallanes, Makati City.- PNA— KBAPI

Kanye West apologizes to Beck for Grammy verbal attack

LOS ANGELES: Hip-hop star Kanye West apologized Thursday to Beck after he loudly objected to the alternative rocker winning the Grammy for Album of the Year.

“I would like to publicly apologize to Beck. I’m sorry Beck,” West wrote on Twitter.
West also apologized to funk-driven young star Bruno Mars, writing: “I used to hate on him but I really respect what he does as an artist.”

The statements of contrition come after West stole some of the limelight at the Grammys on February 8 by questioning the surprise honor for Beck’s “Morning Phase,” a melancholy album driven by acoustic guitar and strings.

West briefly rushed toward the stage at the Grammys and later told an interviewer that Beck should “respect artistry” by giving the prize to Beyonce.

West—one of the most awarded artists with 21 Grammys over his career—argued that the music industry’s premier event should recognize top-selling musicians as they earn advertising revenue by performing at the televised gala.

But last week, West said that he finally heard “Morning Phase” while at a restaurant with Taylor Swift—another artist he has berated in the past—and enjoyed the album.

Beck, known for his eclectic mash-ups of genres, has won critical acclaim over his two-decade career but his fan base is far more niche than those of West or Beyonce.

“Heto na, Reggee, I was informed by a travel agency na wala na raw mabiling ticket for April and May going to Japan, ha-ha-ha. Kababanggit ko raw ng Japan, hayun, ang daming nagpa-book. Kaya ikaw, Reggee since mahilig kayo mag-travel, you try to visit Japan, itapat mo na lang ng October or November kasi nagpapalit ang kulay ng mga trees and it’s so nice talaga,” pang-eengganyo sa amin ng Queen of All Media.

Oo nga naman, he-he-he.
Ito ang nilalaman ng “Dedmabels” blog ni Kris.

“I was wondering why I was getting texts from different, varied people urging me to hurry up and switch my voting address to Tarlac. Sabi ko wala naman akong property du’n, I live in QC, bought another home here in QC, and we have a sizable property in an Ayala development in Silang, Cavite that I bought as investment for my two sons. I have sold all the four condominium units we owned (the two we lived in, and the two in Rockwell we were renting out) in Makati and should actually be going to Comelec QC soon for my transfer of registration record.

Then I was sent the link to INQUIRER.NET (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/675072/tingting-cojuangco-on-kris-running-for-governor-id-leave-the-country) and I understood what those texts were meant to convey!

“OMG, na-super LAUGH TRIP ako! Now I know why even the Superstar, Ate Guy on The Buzz last Sunday was asking me if I was running in 2016.

Seriously though, and this isn’t meant to brag but simply to state facts, I just renewed four major endorsement contracts, all for two years each, meaning they will expire 1st quarter of 2017: for Boardwalk, a direct selling company I’ve been with since 2009; Chowking, which I not only endorse but already own a franchise of and we are proudly on our way to opening our second branch by the 3rd quarter of the year; and two multinational companies that have contracts specifically stating that I can unequivocally guarantee that I have no plans of seeking elective office for the duration of our contracts.

“Boy Abunda is also in the final stages of negotiations with two more new companies wanting to get me as their brand ambassadors. On The Buzz I already said that my priority is to not only financially secure the future of my two sons, but to really be physically present in their lives, most especially Bimb’s, because Gerbel, his yaya since birth will get married this September. How can I be an effective public servant when my heart’s priority is my two sons? I sincerely believe to succeed in anything, I will need 100% FOCUS.

“You all know Josh has special needs, and he is my lifelong responsibility. Bimb only turns 8 this April 19, and until he’s at least in high school, I intend to be the most devoted presence of his life. He is growing up with a SINGLE mom, but I can say with 100% pride that I more than DOUBLE the love and affirmation, attention and affection to make him feel secure and complete.

“Public service, whether elective or appointed office will come in due time, seriously I want to give back to the country that has blessed me so immensely, and not just via the taxes I’m religiously paying (2014 estimated income tax total payments to the BIR from me from my accountants Reyes Tacundong is in the 54 million peso range).

“Actually may naisip na nga akong campaign platform if and when the timing is right: I’ve religiously and honestly paid my taxes to the Philippine government since I was 15 years old. I have never cheated the government of money, and I know how hard it is to sign those BIR payment checks when you are fearful of where the money will go. I was 100% trustworthy in paying my taxes, you can be sure I will be 100% trustworthy in taking care of yours.

“PLUS, and most importantly you all know what you’re getting in me, I have no skeletons in any closet left, hanggang bulalo ko alam n’yo na ang kuwento. And sa KADALDALAN ko, may anomalya bang magaganap na makakalusot?

“But politics is not happening this 2016. For now, I am blessed to be an entertainer (host and occasional actress), an endorser, a producer, a website owner, a restaurant franchise owner, an investor, and a MOTHER.”

Flotation technology plant in Itogon on

The Gravitational-Flotation Technology plant project in Itogon, Benguet is on.
The construction of the gravitational-flotation technology pilot plant has officially begun with a ground-breaking ceremony today, February 27.

Department of Science and Technology-CAR regional director Julius Sicat told media the project which is the first of its kind ensures not only economic benefits in the mining industry but environmental safety as well.

The gravitational-flotation technology is a University of the Philippines-developed technology which is high yielding alternative processor that has the ability to process gold and copper without the use of cyanidation and amalgation making it environment friendly.

"This is a good signal na this environment friendly technology would eventually dry sa ating most problematic area when it comes to environmental degregation dito sa Benguet, and that is Itogon," said Sicat noting the existence of mine tailings and the use of mercury and cyanide of miners.
"Hindi nito kayang isolve yung problema ng buong Itogon, but what we want to show here is that this technology works and it would be able to save environment while give more income to investors," he added.

With this technology, the recovery of gold is expected to improve from the average 40 to 50 percent when using the ordinary practices that uses chemical hazards into 90 to 95 percent.
The plant which will be at 500 square kilometers has the capacity to process five tons of gold and/or copper a day.

It has three components: the technology whih separates and converts ore to gold; the analytical laboratory and quality control area; and an integrated tailings disposal system.
The project aims to identify the factors contributing to the effective recovery of gold through gravity concentration and flotation; to establish an optimum operating procedures using the technology; and to encourage small scale miners to switch from the traditional way of processig gold to this new kind of technology.

Once the plant is field tested and the objectives have been met, the supervision which is currently in the hands of the University of the Philippines will be turned over to the project beneficiaries, the municipality of Itogon and the Benguet Federation of Small Scale Miners, Inc.

Sicat said the total project cost is P26 million inclusive only of the facility and the laboratory.
An additional P10 million will be laid out for the laboratory and equipment to be used by UP for the testing and comparative analysis between the output from the traditional processing of gold and the output of the gravitational-flotation technology.

Project leader Engr. Herman Mendoza of the UP-Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materias Engineering said in a press conference last year that the there will also be a funding for the educational training of small scale miners on how to operate the plant.

Army, BIFF in fierce firefight in Maguindanao

(Source: Google Maps & SunStar)

DATU SAUDI AMPATUAN – Thousands of civilians fled their communities in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao early Friday after heavily armed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were sighted in the village of Kitango, an Army official said.

Captain Joann Petinglay, 6th ID spokesperson, said members of the 45th Infantry Battalion are now engaged in a running gun battle with BIFF forces, led by a certain Commander Kadafi in Barangay Maytumaig, Datu Saudi Unsay.

Portions of the highway between Crossing Salbo, Datu Saudi Ampatuan to the town hall of Datu Unsay town, were closed.

The firefight started at 9:30 a.m. in Sitio Kuwari, Barangay Maitumaig, Datu Unsay, Maguindanao.
Evacuation continues.

“There was massive evacuation of civilians,” Petinglay said, adding that before the encounter between Army and the BIFF, thousands of civilians have already evacuated anticipating armed skirmishes.

Heavy fighting is taking place between the towns of Datu Saudi Ampatuan and Datu Unsay Ampatuan, specifically near the road.

The road from Dalican, Datu Odin Sinsuat until Shariff Aguak town, both in Maguindanao, have been closed to traffic as Army and BIFF are poised to engage in shooting war, a commuter told Radyo Bida Koronadal.

Armored personnel carriers and artillery have been positioned beside the highway as the clash site was only a few kilometers away from the road network.

Petinglay said elements of the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade, backed by armored personnel carrier, have been deployed along the highway between Talayan and Datu Saudi Ampatuan, both in Maguindanao.
She could not say how many families have evacuated.

She said the civilians first reported to the Army that they noticed heavily armed BIFF in their communities and anticipating harassment or Army-BIFF encounter.
“The highway, portion of the Cotabato-Isulan highway, has been close to ensure the safety of commuters," Petinglay said. (PNA)

Japan no longer distinguishing between military- and civilian-use technologies

TAKEFUMI KAWAGUCHI, Nikkei staff writer

TOKYO -- In a significant development, though with no fanfare, some Japanese universities and public research institutions have begun exploring dual-use technologies.

Robotics, biotech and other technologies that have both military and civilian applications are being looked at.

The prestigious University of Tokyo, commonly known as Todai, has even revised its guidelines on scientific research. Regretting its involvement in weapons development during World War II, the university had long since prohibited defense research.

In fact, many Japanese universities have taken a cautious stance on the military use of their research results since the end of the war.

But now the government is dangling a carrot in front of them -- funding.

What is dual-use?
When it comes to dual-use research and technologies, there is no clear line between black and white. Robotics, rockets and GPS all reside in one big gray zone. What is more, new materials, semiconductors and other technologies developed by universities have already been used in fighter jets, missiles and other weapons.

In some cases, technologies that sprang from good intentions have been misused in terrorism, as weaponry and so on. Dual-use research in the area of life science has also drawn attention since a string of anthrax incidents hit the U.S. following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Senator seeks special tax incentive for Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Aquilino "Koko” Pimentel III is filing a bill that will grant a special tax exemption to Sarangani Province Rep. Manny Pacquiao, to inspire the Filipino world champion in his history-making megafight with American boxer Floyd Mayweather.

“Manny being a Filipino promotes the Philippines,” said Pimentel, adding the special tax incentive is a fitting tribute to the priceless package proudly promoting the country once again in the international map.

“The marketing value for the country is priceless,” he said in a statement.

Pimentel justified his proposal granting a special tax exemption to Pacquiao from his earnings in the world welterweight unification bout on May 2 in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao will stake his World Boxing Organization title while Mayweather, undefeated in 47 fights, will stake his WBC and WBA belts in the much-awaited fight which is worth between $250 million and $400 million on early estimates.

Pimentel said Pacquiao, the former eight-division world champion, needs all the support and inspiration he could get during his training preparations for the fight that took more than five years in the making.

“During his training, let us inspire Manny by way of passing a special tax exemption act for this particular fight. Anyway we are not blind that a substantial part of his boxing proceeds goes to the people through Manny’s helping hand,” said Pimentel.

Pimentel said the honor and world recognition the country will generate is unprecedented considering the tremendous publicity and promotion that will mark the run-up to the fight.
“Manny is now part of our history and of world sports history. Let’s give him this tax incentive in recognition to his invaluable efforts to promote boxing and the country around the world,” said Pimentel.

Boxing fans had wanted to see the fight as early as 2009, but it did not materialize until only recently when Mayweather finally agreed to tangle with the Filipino, who has a 57-5-2 win-loss-draw record.

Chiz: PNoy not liable for Mamasapano bloodbath

Image result for images for escudero chiz

MANILA – Senator Francis ''Chiz'' Escudero believes President Benigno Aquino III may not be held liable for the Mamasapano bloodbath.

The President has been widely criticized for entrusting the anti-terrorist operation to a suspended police official, and for his perceived lack of empathy for families of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) troopers killed in the clash.

But Escudero, chair of the Senate finance committee, said none of Aquino's actions is punishable by law.

"Sa ngayon, wala akong nakikita (For now I cannot see any liability)," he told reporters at a briefing.
"Wala sa Revised Penal Code na nagsasabing 'pag mali ang kinausap mo o tinanungan mo … may pananagutan ka (Nothing in the Revised Penal Code says you would be liable if you speak to or ask questions of the wrong person)."

In hindsight, however, the senator said the President should not have involved resigned police chief Alan Purisima in the operation. Purisima was then under suspension by the Ombudsman on corruption charges.

Aquino had said Purisima fed him wrong information on the operation, such as the presence of military support for the SAF troopers. Their exchange of text messages was made public during one of the Senate's public hearings on the matter this week.

USURPATION
Senate President Franklin Drilon, meanwhile, believes Purisima could be charged with usurpation of authority for playing an active role in the operation despite his suspension.

Escudero disagrees, however, noting that Purisima was not suspended from the police force itself.
"Suspendido lamang siya bilang PNP chief at hindi bilang pulis (He was suspended only as a PNP chief and not as a policeman)," he said.

"Nanatiling suspendidong pulis siya na may apat na estrella sa balikat niya (He remained a suspended policeman with four stars on his shoulder)."

Still, Escudero believes Purisima should have been kept out of the operation, which also led to the death of 18 members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and at least five civilians.
He said other officials who played key roles in the operation, such as relieved former SAF commander Getulio Napeñas, could face administrative penalties for the operation, which killed top terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias ''Marwan''.

Escudero said, ultimately, those who killed the SAF commandos should be held liable. They are reportedly members of the MILF, its splinter group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and some members of private armies.

"Dapat mapanagot at mapaharap sa dambana ng hustisya 'yong mga kumalabit ng gatilyo laban sa kapulisan natin na gumagawa lamang ng trabaho nila (Those who pulled the trigger and killed our police who where just doing their jobs must be held liable and brought to justice)," he said.

The public order committee, which led the Senate's investigation, is in the process of preparing a committee report on the Mamasapano clash based on five public hearings and five executive sessions.
The committee's chair, Senator Grace Poe, pointed to lapses in the police's leadership and their failure to coordinate with the military and government leaders as among the reasons behind the operation's bloody end.

LOS ANGELES—While Eddie Redmayne gave the most endearing acceptance speech, breaking into disarming giggles after saying the word “Oscar” out loud at last Sunday’s big night, best adapted screenplay winner Graham Moore gave the most moving remarks. The writer of “The Imitation Game” disclosed that at 16, he felt different, suffered from depression and tried to kill himself.
Graham, who adapted the biography, “Alan Turing: The Enigma” by Andrew Hodges, earned a standing ovation from the star-studded 87th Academy Awards audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The Columbia University alum cited Turing, who helped crack tough Nazi codes and shorten WWII but was later prosecuted for homosexuality under UK’s anti-gay laws in the 1950s.

Turing killed himself at the age of 41.
“Alan Turing never got to stand on a stage like this and look out at all of these disconcertingly attractive faces and I do,” said Graham, a Chicago native whose mother, Susan Sher, served as the city of Chicago’s chief lawyer and First Lady Michelle Obama’s chief of staff. “That’s the most unfair thing I’ve ever heard. So, in this brief time here, I want to say this: When I was 16 years old, I tried to kill myself because I felt weird, I felt different and I felt like I did not belong.”

“And now, I’m standing here,” continued the 33-year-old who looked up to Turing as his hero since he was 14. “So, I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she’s weird or she’s different or she doesn’t fit in anywhere. Yes, you do. I promise, you do. Stay weird. Stay different. And then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message to the next person who comes along.”

Little black circles
Backstage, Graham, whose bestselling debut novel, “The Sherlockian” debuted in 2010, fielded questions from journalists suddenly very curious about him.

On his decision to reveal something so personal to a global audience, Graham explained, “The cameras are just little black circles so it’s not like I see a billion people when I’m out there looking around. No, it was really hard but it felt…I’m a writer, when am I ever going to be on television? This was my 45 seconds in my life to get on television and say something so I felt like I might as well use it to say something meaningful.”

Asked how he turned his life around from a suicidal and depressed teenager into an Oscar-winning screenwriter, Graham answered, “Twenty years later. It’s been a little while. Depression is something that I have dealt with every single day of my life since. But I’m very blessed to have a family that was so supportive then and has been so supportive ever since.

“My mother, who is just over there somewhere, was sitting next to me tonight. I know for her who has seen me in all the stages of this, it was really meaningful. I feel very blessed to have had friends and family around who are so supportive and not everyone gets to have that. I’m very aware of how lucky I am to have been so blessed.”

The screenwriter and author, who played in rock bands, created a music studio and worked as a sound engineer in New York while he established his writing career, said that Turing’s story inspired him. “I’ve been obsessed with Alan’s story since I was a teenager,” he shared. “I feel very lucky to have known it when I was very young and to have known about him. He was always a tremendous hero of mine.

“Alan always seemed like the outsider’s outsider, this guy who never fit in in his own time for so many reasons. Because he was the smartest man in every room he entered, because he was a gay man at a time when that was not simply frowned upon, but was literally illegal, and then because he was keeping all these secrets for the government.

“And so he was the guy who was sort of apart from society for so many different reasons, but precisely because he was apart from society, he was able to see the world in a way that no one else had, and I always found that incredibly inspirational.”

Asked if he felt added pressure adapting the story of Turing since there are few films that accurately represent the LGBT community, Graham replied, “Yeah, I certainly did. When you’re approaching a story of this magnitude and you’re approaching a life and a person as unique as Alan Turing, there’s this tremendous responsibility on your shoulders… to tell his story fairly, accurately and responsibly.

Mistreated by history
“Alan is someone who was so mistreated by history. He is someone who, as a gay man, was persecuted by the government on whose existence he provided for. And, as such, I always felt like he needed a film that spread his legacy, that celebrated it and brought it to a new audience of people who might not otherwise have been exposed to this man because history had treated him so poorly.”
As to what he’s doing next, Graham announced, “I’m finishing my second novel. I’m almost done.”
Later, Graham clarified some folks’ presumption that he was gay. “I’m not gay but I don’t think you have to be gay to have a gay hero (Turing),” he was quoted as saying.

Green card quip
Alejandro González Iñarritu was asked about presenter Sean Penn’s quip, “Who gave this son of a b**** a green card?” after the actor announced the Mexican filmmaker’s “Birdman” as the best picture winner. The director stressed, “I found it hilarious. Sean and I have that kind of brutal relationship where only true friendship can survive.

“When I was directing him in ‘21 Grams,’ he was always making jokes. And I also tell him a lot of very tough jokes that I will not tell you. But anyway, we have that old friendship. I didn’t find him offensive. I think it was very funny, in my personal view.”

On being able to tell stories that are not necessarily about Latinos, Alejandro, who also won the best director prize, declared, “Look at this room. I don’t know how many nationalities are in this room but I don’t feel different from anybody here. You can be from any continent, any language. I don’t care. I feel very related to any of you.
“So I, as an artist, as a human, as a filmmaker, cannot have these stupid borders, flags and passports. Those are concepts invented by human society. But, honestly, naked, in tighty-whities, we will be the same. I have never felt that different.

“So for me to make films in the United States, Africa, Spain or Mexico…I’m talking about human beings and emotions. That’s the beauty of art. Art doesn’t have those stiff ideological borders that f*** the world so much.”

Not as nervous

Eddie, who cradled his best actor trophy for “The Theory of Everything” like a baby at one point in our backstage time with him, said he was not as nervous as the first time he appeared on the Oscars stage in 2013.

“I was weirdly not that nervous because two years ago, I came to the Oscars for the first time with ‘Les Miserables,’” said the amiable British actor. “I had to sing live on stage. Just before going on, someone with a headset said, ‘Yeah, that’s a billion people watching.’ That’s too much stress for your vocal chords to possibly consider. So that was such a terrifying prospect but actually, today felt much more relaxing. You either win or you lose—either way, I was so thrilled to be invited to the party.”

Struggling days
J.K. Simmons, a first time Oscar winner at 60 for his tour de force performance in “Whiplash,” looked back at his struggling days when he considered giving up on acting several times.

“I almost got back on the bus a handful of times,” J.K. admitted. “If I had any really reasonable options in terms of employment, I probably would have, but unfortunately, I didn’t—or fortunately, I guess, at the same time. I read a very romantic book when I was young, when I was in college—(Rainer Maria) Rilke’s ‘Letters to a Young Poet.’

“I’ve always felt that if you are in any kind of an artistic, creative endeavor and you feel that there’s something else you could do for a living and be happy, you should do something else. Because you are much more likely to find comfort and happiness. If you can look deeply within yourself and honestly answer that there is nothing else that will bring you satisfaction, then there’s your answer.”

Palace-clergy clash worsens

A “word war” between Malacañang and members of the National Transformation Council (NTC) worsened on Thursday as both camps directly assailed each other over the latter’s renewed call for the resignation not only of President Benigno Aquino 3rd and his Cabinet but all lawmakers from the Senate and the House of Representatives as well.

In Malacañang, Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. warned the group not to step over the boundaries of legitimate dissent as the government stands ready to have them charged for violation of the Revised Penal Code.

In a news briefing, Coloma said Justice Secretary Leila de Lima’s earlier warning should be enough to restrain the NTC from committing these possible violations.

“Gagawin ng pamahalaan ang nararapat para panagutin ‘yung mga lumalabag sa batas [The government will do everything in its power to make lawbreakers pay],” he added.

Coloma made the remarks after Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles, a convenor of the NTC, taunted the government by saying he is not afraid to go to jail and that such would give him “great pleasure.”
The NTC also called on the entire Cabinet and all members of Congress to resign for they, too, it claimed, benefited from so-called pork barrel funds.

“It will be a great pleasure for me if I go to jail. Many of those in jail are innocent and still many of those guilty are there not because they are the only sinners but the greater sinners are free and are placed in government,” the prelate, who led the latest gathering of the council in Lipa City, Batangas, also on Thursday, said.

He insisted that their actions cannot be considered sedition or rebellion.

Earlier, de Lima blasted the NTC for “perverting the nation’s grief” over the death of 44 elite police commandos in Mamasapano town in Maguindanao province on January 25, saying the group is nothing but an “aggrupation of disgruntled GMA [Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, a former President] allies” and “opportunists” who want to sow “discord and division” among the ranks of the country’s military and police organizations.

Coloma said those behind the NTC should heed the warning so as not to get themselves into trouble.
He added that the Department of Justice “will do what is necessary based on existing laws.”
The official described the NTC’s actions as “off key,” explaining that the group seeks to reverse economic gains the country has achieved over the years.

Meanwhile, Arguelles said if the government considers “listening to the poor” as a seditious act, then he is willing to join the poor in jail in order to listen to what they think should be done for a better society.

The prelate scored de Lima for calling them “pro-GMA,” explaining that the NTC is a multisectoral group of those with various political and religious beliefs.

When asked for his message to the Justice chief, the bishop said he has none but reiterated that de Lima is among those who should step down.

Also on Thursday, a Church-based group described President Aquino as a “fool” for lacking wisdom in dealing with the massacre of the police commandos.

According to the Religious Discernment Group (CDG), a month after the carnage, the people only heard “very little wisdom but lots of foolishness” from the President.

“We the Religious Discernment Group call on President Aquino to speak the truth and take responsibility. Only then will the trust of the people in the government be restored and peace based on justice be achieved,” the RDG said in a statement signed by convenors Fr. Quirico Pedregosa Jr. and Sr. Patricia Fox.

The CDG has joined earlier calls made by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and other Church-based and multi-ectoral groups, demanding a full and satisfactory accounting of the Mamasapano incident to Filipinos.
