WORLD: Duterte expresses regret over comments against Obama

By Trisha Macas

President Rodrigo Duterte expressed regret on Tuesday for a tirade against Barack Obama in which he called the US leader a "son of a whore."

"While the immediate cause was my strong comments to certain press questions that elicited concern and distress we also regret it came across as a personal attack on the US president," a statement released by Duterte said.

The White House announced that the one-on-one meeting between the two leaders in Vientiane, Laos scheduled for Tuesday had been canceled.

This was after Duterte made remarks against the US president when asked what he would tell Obama if inquired about the extrajudicial killings in the country during their scheduled meeting.

Upon his arrival in Laos, Duterte said that he would not want to start a fight with the "most powerful president on the planet." Agence France-Presse via GMA News
