Ilocos Norte now placed under state of calamity

LAOAG CITY, Philippines – The province of Ilocos Norte has been declared under a state of emergency due to damages brought by Supertyphoon Lawin, Friday.

The provincial board made the declaration through a special session exactly 2:15 p.m.

Donald Nicolas, vice chairman of the Committee on Natural Calamities and Public Safety, said there is a need to declare the whole province under a state of calamity to utilize the remaining P17.5 million from the P58.5-million calamity fund.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, the total worth of damages recorded by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Resiliency Council (PDRRMRC) is P673.5 million. P399 million of which is on infrastructure while P274 million on agricultural damages.

The PDRRMRC has also recorded 87 totally damaged and 817 partially damaged houses.

Meanwhile as of 12 noon Friday, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has reenergized the Laoag-San Nicolas 69kV line extending power transmission service to the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative, according to Lilibeth Gaydowen, NGCP corporate communications and public affairs officer.

Laoag City was already placed under a state of calamity on Thursday. with reports from
