MANILA – Malacañang again reiterated the need to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), the fate of which is now uncertain in the wake of the bloody Mamasapano clash last January 25.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the BBL is the country's best chance for a lasting peace in the restive region of Mindanao.

''I think this is important for us: that we discuss and deliberate on the Bangsamoro Basic Law. This is our chance for peace in an area that has been marked by unrest. So pag-usapan natin ang Bangsamoro Basic Law,'' Lacierda said.

''Nangyari na po ang Mamasapano; accountability is being called for, but over and above accountability, we have to move forward further. We are now moving towards, looking for accountability in what happened in Mamasapano. But also, there is also a greater need for us to achieve lasting peace in Mindanao."

The passage of the BBL has been put in peril after 44 Philippine National Police – Special Action Force (SAF) troopers were killed in a clash with fighters from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which is currently in peace talks with the government and was supposed to observe a ceasefire.

Discussions in both the Senate and House of Representatives on the BBL have been suspended pending the result of the investigations into the bloody clash.

Lacierda said despite the suspension of discussions on the BBL, he believes that legislators are aware of the importance of the key piece of legislation, which the Aquino administration hopes to leave as one of its legacies.

''I think our legislators, everyone, every Filipino knows sa speech pa lang ni Pangulong Aquino kagabi he has emphasized the fight for peace. Kailangan natin ng kapayapaan,'' he said.
''Masasayang ang pagbubuwis ng buhay ng ating SAF commandos sa Mamasapano kung hindi tayo magkakaroon ng kapayapaan sa Mindanao. So I am certain that the legislators know in their hearts that there's a need for us to come up with an agreement and a law that would create a viable institution in Mindanao that can pave the way for peace and development-further development in Mindanao." - ABS-CBNnews.com
