MANILA, Philippines — The delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Philippines vowed to maintain its support for the country's development plan including issues on the peace process, trade and human rights.
EU Ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen noted that the organization has an ongoing judicial cooperation program with the Philippines.
The program seeks to ensure that Filipinos get access to justice, which Jessen noted as a very important human rights aspect.
"That program is successful, is ongoing and continuous," Jessen told members of the press during a press briefing at Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City.
The EU is also working on how to shorten the judicial process in Philippine courts, particularly by having lower level courts decide on certain issues.
"We're working to see if we can speed up the procedures and make sure that the access is possible in a faster way than currently," Jessen said.
Aside from judicial cooperation, the EU also has programs in connection with Duterte's anti-drugs campaign.
The EU is working on how it can support the drug rehabilitation process in the Philippines using European practices.
"We are also working on drug rehabilitation to see how we best can support with European practices also together with the [World Health Organization] to make sure that drug addicts can get the treatment that they deserve," the envoy said.
The EU delegation to the Philippines launched a commemorative book entitled "The Ties that Bind" to mark its 25th year in the country.
"The 25-year book is a very good overview of what have we been doing and how do we work together and how do we help each other," Jessen said.
