Alvarez said in a statement released to media that Dela Rosa's resignation would restore the public's respect for office of the PNP chief.
“The commission of a heinous crime right in his very nose is not only an insult but a clear indication that he has lost the respect of his people,” the House speaker said.
“Dela Rosa should buckle down to work or better yet give the job to someone else who is dead serious in leading the PNP in its multi-pronged war against drugs, criminals and the scalawags within its ranks,” he added.
Alvarez also hit Dela Rosa's “booboos”, some of which went viral on social media. The speaker mentioned an incident where Dela Rosa was see panicking at a press conference when a confiscated firecracker began to smoke.
How can we believe the stern statements Dela Rosa had been making against criminals like in the aftermath of the Davao City bombing when he was the first to run in the slightest possibility of danger?” he said.
The House speaker accused the PNP chief of being interested in having a showbiz career, singing videoke and watching concerts.
Dela Rosa attended a rock concert last week in Pasay City as part of the government's campaign against illegal drugs. The PNP chief performed with a band and urged the attendees to support the government’s war on drugs.
He was also spotted watching the Bryan Adams concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum earlier this week.
Dela Rosa confirmed Thursday that Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo was killed inside the PNP's national headquarters in Quezon City.
He said he wanted to melt in shame after learning of the incident from SPO4 Roy Villegas, one of the police officers implicated in the case.
"Very angry. Very offended. Kung pwede matunaw na ako sa kinalalagyan ko sa hiya (If I could only melt in shame from where I am now)," dela Rosa told reporters at Malacañan on Thursday.
"If I have my way, I would kill the policemen who are kidnappers. But I cannot do it because it's illegal," he added.
In his close to seven months as the PNP chief, dela Rosa became visibly emotional over cops implicated in illegal activities.
Dela Rosa shed tears during the Senate investigation into the death of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa in November. In August, he lost his cool and cursed cops over their alleged involvement in the narcotics trade.
