MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo criticized the behavior of lawmakers at Thursday's public inquiry into the illegal drug trade, saying they feasted on the love affair of Sen. Leila de Lima and former driver and bodyguard Ronnie Dayan.

“Ang lawmakers mas mataas dapat ang expectation kasi tinitingala natin, they are supposed to represent us," Robredo said in a statement.

A Camarines Sur representative before being elected to the second top post, Robredo said the line of questioning of the House of Representatives justice committee was irrelevant and unnecessary even if the lives of government officials are open to public.

“May mga nadaanan ako na questions na hindi na relevant sa kaso. Kami kasi mga public officials iyong mga buhay namin open book naman pero tiningnan ko iyong mga tanong parang totally unneccessary, bastos na talaga ang iba,” Robredo said, adding that she is an advocate of women’s rights.

“Wala siyang lugar dapat sa isang institusyon na dapat nirerespeto natin bilang isang institusyon,” she also said.

Robredo said saw lawmakers' questions thrown at Dayan were “bordering on malicious” and a form harassment, veering away from the main objective of legislation.

She said elected officials are looked upon as leaders and role models of society.

“Parang nangyari talaga slut-shaming. Pambabastos talaga. So pag hinahayaan natin na ganoon ang actuations ng mga tinitingala natin, parang binibigyan natin ng lisensya ang ordinaryong mamamayan na ganoon din ang gawin,” Robredo said.

Even as she criticized the conduct of the the hearing, the vice president clarified that she does not have anything against the investigation into alleged offenses of De Lima, who is her colleague in the Liberal Party.

“Wala naman akong problema na si Sen. De Lima is being put on trial, kasi kung may mga kailangan sagutin, panagutan,” she added.

Another female lawmaker also criticized Thursday's House inquiry.

An upset Sen. Grace Poe on Friday considered the hearing as a form of voyeurism for going over the line on the personal life of De Lima.

“A lot of the questions were geared towards voyeurism—national voyeurism as opposed to 'in aid of legislation,'” the senator said as she shared her thoughts on women leadership and influencing change.

“This is quite upsetting... We understand that a lot of things have to be investigated but I think that the details of certain personal affairs should not have been discussed,” Poe said.
