MANILA, Philippines — Former driver and bodyguard of Sen. Leila De Lima, Ronnie Dayan, on Thursday repeatedly denied that he has met any of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) inmates who testified against him and the lawmaker.
At the House of Representatives justice committee probe, Dayan admitted that he accompanied then Justice Secretary Leila De Lima at the national penitentiary.
Other close-in security members Joenel Sanchez, Joebert Ermi and Joseph "Badong" Salvador, who are also soldiers and presidential security guard given by Malacañang, were the usual security members who enter the NBP, Dayan said.
He added that he is not familiar with the inmates inside the prison compound.
"'Pag pumupunta kami, noong unang beses, pangalawang beses at pangatlong beses, sumasama ako sa loob ako na lang, ang naiwan sa sasakyan ang mga sumasama sakanya noon ay yuong ibang close-in security niya na sina Joenel Sanchez Joebert Emi at yung kung tawagin namin ay Badong," Dayan said.
Asked if he knows Rodolfo Magleo, Engelbert Acenas Durano, Jovencio Ablen, si Renante Diaz, Jaybee Sebastian and Herbert Colanggo, Dayan said he only knows Colanggo by name but have not met him in person.
Inmates Magleo, Acenas and Colanggo previously claimed before the House probe saying they gave De Lima drug money amounting to millions through Dayan, allegedly acting as bagman.
Despite earlier testimonies of the convict witnesses, Dayan clarified that he only met with alleged drug lord and now accuser of De Lima, Kerwin Espinosa.
"Wala na po si Ma'am na inutos sa akin na ibang pagkolektahan pa ng pera. Si Kerwin lang po," he said.
Dayan said the reason why he wanted to attend the earlier hearing sessions of the House panel is because he wanted to clear his name.
However, he and his daughter, Hannah Mae Dayan claimed De Lima advised them not to attend the probe, citing that the inquiry was merely part of the scheme of President Rodrigo Duterte and House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
Since the House probe started in September, De Lima refused to attend saying it is a "sham" hearing with no objective but to demolish her.
