MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer John Riel Casimero has decided to relinquish his IBF flyweight champion and campaign at the heavier super flyweight division (115 pounds).

In a PhilBoxing.com news release, the 26-year-old Casimero said he is seeking bigger fights and eyeing to win a third world title.

"To win my third title would be a great honor for me and put my name in with some of the best fighters my country has ever produced," said Casimero (23-3, with 15 KOs).
"I will be immediately looking to make an impact and fight the big fights that allow me the opportunity,” he added.

A former IBF light flyweight titlist, Casimero won the organization’s flyweight championship when he knocked out Amnat Ruenroeng in their 2016 rematch – avenging his loss to the Thai champion the previous year.

He has since defended the diadem once, stopping Charlie Edwards in the 10th round at the O2 Arena in London England last September.

At super flyweight, Casimero is gunning for showdowns with fellow Filipino Jerwin Ancajas, who holds the IBF super flyweight crown, and pound-for-pound best Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez of Nicaragua.

The undefeated Gonzalez (46-0, with 38 KOs) holds the WBC version of the super flyweight championship.

Casimero's promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing, said his ward is ready to take over the division.

"He's so strong and he keeps growing," said Lewkowicz.

"It is time for John Riel to move up and secure his place in Philippines boxing history. It is our hope to quickly face Acajas and Chocolatito next year. That is what we will work to make happen," the promoter added.
