COTABATO CITY, Philippines - Different agencies in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) on Monday shipped five tons of relief supplies to tremor-hit areas in Surigao City.

Surigao City in northeastern Mindanao is outside of ARMM, which covers Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur, and the scattered southern island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

The shipment was facilitated by the Humanitarian Emergency Assistance and Response Team (HEART) of the Cotabato City-based ARMM regional government.

“It was a pooled effort of the employees and officials of the ARMM government,” Ramil Masukat, regional focal person for HEART operations, told The STAR Tuesday morning.

The HEART is an ARMM relief and emergency response outfit operating under the ministerial control of the region’s chief executive, Regional Gov. Mujiv Hataman.

The relief supplies intended for earthquake victims in Surigao City and nearby towns in Surigao del Sur and Surigao del Norte are comprised of rice, canned sardines, bottled water and instant coffee.

A 6.7 earthquake shook the three areas late Friday that was followed by intermittent aftershocks.
Agencies on Monday said eight people were killed while more than a thousand others were hurt in the incident.
